Laser dentistry

A dental laser uses a focused beam of light to treat soft tissue such as the gums. For some procedures it can be an alternative to a blade.

Where we use it

At Marwa the laser is used in periodontal flap surgery. This is gum surgery for advanced gum disease (periodontitis), where the gum is gently lifted so the roots and the bone around them can be cleaned deeply, and then placed back.

It can also be used for other gum and soft-tissue procedures, such as reshaping the gums.

Signs of gum disease

• Gums that bleed when you brush
• Swollen or receding gums
• Bad breath that does not go away
• Teeth that feel loose or have started to move

What to expect

For some soft-tissue procedures a laser can mean less bleeding and fewer or no stitches. It is not right for every patient or every treatment. The doctor decides whether to use the laser after examining you, and explains why.
